The Law of the Spirit

for life and godliness

We begin where the LORD began to prove Israel — with bread, and with the seventh day. Then we walk from the Ten Commandments through Deuteronomy in the order they were spoken. If a commandment is spoken again, its later place is bound to the first speaking, and we do not list it twice. Temple service and sacrifices for sin are not named here: those pointed to the Lamb. What remains is how a people live.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

The proving

The test of faith and the seventh day

This is the stand-alone commandment and law. The LORD proved Israel with bread, whether they would walk in His law. He gave the sabbath as a perpetual covenant and a sign of sanctification: stay in place, be still from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, and kindle no fire.

Stay in place, and kindle no fire on the seventh day

Abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. So the people rested on the seventh day. Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.

The voice of God from Sinai. Remember the sabbath stands here in its place — the fourth commandment, between the Name and the honouring of father and mother. Later speakings of each commandment are bound to the first speaking.

No other gods before Him

The judgments given at Sinai

After the ten words, the judgments. How a redeemed people live with servant, neighbour, stranger, beast, and field. Later speakings are bound here to the first.

A Hebrew servant goes out free in the seventh year

Exodus 21:2-6 · Deuteronomy 15:12-18

If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

A maidservant is not to be sold as a strange nation

Exodus 21:7-11

If a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power.

He that smiteth a man so that he die shall be put to death

He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee.

He that stealeth a man shall be put to death

And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

Restitution for injury, stripe for stripe

Exodus 21:18-27 · Leviticus 24:19-20

If men strive, and one smite another; he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed. Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

If an ox gore a man or a woman

Exodus 21:28-32

If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit. But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, he shall surely be put to death.

Restitution for a pit, and for ox against ox

Exodus 21:33-36

If a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein; the owner of the pit shall make it good. And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it.

Restitution for theft

Exodus 22:1-4

If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution.

Restitution for a field eaten, and for fire

Exodus 22:5-6

If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, he shall make restitution of the best of his own field. If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn be consumed, he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.

Keep another man's goods faithfully

Exodus 22:7-15

If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double. If a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof not being with it, he shall surely make it good.

If a man entice a maid that is not betrothed

Exodus 22:16-17 · Deuteronomy 22:28-29

If a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife. If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live

Exodus 22:18 · Leviticus 19:31 · Leviticus 20:6 · Deuteronomy 18:10-12

Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death

Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death.

Do not vex a stranger, widow, or fatherless

If thou lend to the poor, lay not usury upon him

If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. If thou at all take thy neighbour's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down.

Thou shalt not revile God, nor curse the ruler of thy people

Exodus 22:28

Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.

Do not delay the first of thy ripe fruits; ye shall be holy men

Exodus 22:29-31

Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me. And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field.

Thou shalt not raise a false report, nor follow a multitude to do evil

Exodus 23:1-3

Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment.

Bring back thine enemy's ox, and help him with his burden

Exodus 23:4-5 · Deuteronomy 22:1-4

If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, thou shalt surely help with him.

Do not wrest the judgment of the poor, nor take a gift

Exodus 23:6-8 · Deuteronomy 16:19

Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. Keep thee far from a false matter. And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.

Six years thou shalt sow; the seventh the land shall rest

Exodus 23:10-11 · Leviticus 25:1-7

And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof: but the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat.

Three times in the year keep a feast unto Me

Exodus 23:14-17 · Exodus 34:22-24 · Deuteronomy 16:16-17

Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year. The feast of unleavened bread, the feast of harvest, and the feast of ingathering. Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord GOD.

The first of the firstfruits; seethe not a kid in his mother's milk

Exodus 23:19 · Exodus 34:26 · Deuteronomy 14:21

The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

Leviticus

A holy people

Be ye holy, for I am holy. The distinctions of table, kin, neighbour, weight, and time — how a people live after the Lamb has taken the sacrifices for sin.

Distinguish the clean from the unclean

Leviticus 11 · Deuteronomy 14:3-21

This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth: to make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.

It is the blood that maketh an atonement; ye shall eat no blood

Leviticus 17:10-14 · Deuteronomy 12:23-25

For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood.

None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin

Leviticus 18:6-18 · Leviticus 20:11-21 · Deuteronomy 27:20-23

None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.

Do not lie with mankind as with womankind

Leviticus 18:22 · Leviticus 20:13

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Do not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech

Leviticus 18:21 · Leviticus 20:1-5 · Deuteronomy 18:10

And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.

Leave the corners of thy field and the gleaning of thy harvest

And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. Thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God.

Do not defraud thy neighbour, nor hold the wages of a hireling

Leviticus 19:13 · Deuteronomy 24:14-15

Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

Do not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind

Leviticus 19:14 · Deuteronomy 27:18

Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD.

Do no unrighteousness in judgment; do not go as a talebearer

Leviticus 19:15-16

Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour. Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people.

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself

Leviticus 19:17-18

Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

Do not let cattle gender with a diverse kind, nor sow mingled seed

Leviticus 19:19 · Deuteronomy 22:9-11

Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

The fruit of trees: three years uncircumcised, the fourth holy

Leviticus 19:23-25

And when ye shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as uncircumcised: three years shall it be as uncircumcised unto you. But in the fourth year all the fruit thereof shall be holy to praise the LORD withal.

Regard not them that have familiar spirits; no cuttings nor marks

Leviticus 19:26-28 · Leviticus 19:31 · Deuteronomy 14:1

Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times. Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore

Leviticus 19:29 · Deuteronomy 23:17-18

Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.

Honour the face of the old man

Leviticus 19:32

Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.

Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin

Leviticus 19:35-36 · Deuteronomy 25:13-16

Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure. Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God.

Proclaim the feasts of the LORD in their seasons

Leviticus 23 · Numbers 28–29

Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts. Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation.

Proclaim liberty in the jubilee; do not oppress one another

Leviticus 25:8-17

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you. Ye shall not therefore oppress one another, but thou shalt fear thy God.

If thy brother be waxen poor, relieve him; rule not over him with rigour

Leviticus 25:35-43

And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner. Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.

In the wilderness

Still on the road, still under the same Voice. Fringes, vows, refuge, and inheritance — the remnant walking between Sinai and the plains.

Make fringes in the borders of your garments

Numbers 15:37-41 · Deuteronomy 22:12

Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them.

If a man vow a vow, he shall not break his word

Numbers 30:2 · Deuteronomy 23:21-23

If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.

Appoint cities of refuge, that the slayer may flee thither

Numbers 35:9-15 · Deuteronomy 19:1-10

Ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares. And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.

Blood defileth the land; it cannot be cleansed but by the blood of him that shed it

Numbers 35:30-34

Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land.

If a man die and have no son, pass the inheritance unto his daughter

Numbers 27:8-11 · Numbers 36:7-9

If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter. And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.

Confess the sin, and recompense the trespass

Numbers 5:6-7 · Leviticus 6:2-5

When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall recompense his trespass with the principal thereof, and add unto it the fifth part thereof.

Deuteronomy

In the plains of Moab

On the edge of the land, Moses speaks again what was not yet named, and binds the rest to the first speaking. Temple service is not listed. What remains is how a people live.

Hear, O Israel; teach them diligently unto thy children

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 · Deuteronomy 11:18-21

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children.

Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God

Deuteronomy 6:16

Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

Neither shalt thou make marriages with them

Deuteronomy 7:3-4

Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods.

When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD

Deuteronomy 8:10

When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed

Deuteronomy 14:22-29 · 1 Corinthians 3:16 · 1 Corinthians 6:19 · 2 Corinthians 6:16 · John 17:10, 22 · Galatians 4:1 · Haggai 2:9

Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. And if the way be too long for thee, then shalt thou turn it into money; and thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice.

Now, as the temple

Tithing is done away with, together with the laws that had to do with the temple, because we are now the temple. With our bodies as the temple, tithing is not just obsolete; it is an injustice, a sin that undermines the oneness believers share with God through His indwelling Spirit. God calls us to dedicate 100% of our resources to His purpose.

At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release

Deuteronomy 15:1-11

At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release. And this is the manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it. Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother.

Judges and officers shalt thou make; justice, justice shalt thou follow

Deuteronomy 16:18-20

Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, and they shall judge the people with just judgment. That which is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

The king shall not multiply horses, wives, or silver; he shall write this law

Deuteronomy 17:14-20

When thou art come unto the land, and shalt say, I will set a king over me; he shall not multiply horses to himself, neither shall he multiply wives to himself, neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. And he shall write him a copy of this law, and he shall read therein all the days of his life.

The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee

Deuteronomy 18:15-22

The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken. But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, even that prophet shall die.

Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark

Deuteronomy 19:14 · Deuteronomy 27:17

Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance.

If a man has two wives, the portion of the firstborn belongs to the son of the first wife

Deuteronomy 21:15-17

If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated: Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn: But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

Do not leave the hanged overnight upon the tree

Deuteronomy 21:22-23

His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled.

A woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, nor a man a woman's garment

Deuteronomy 22:5

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

If a bird's nest chance to be before thee, thou shalt not take the dam with the young

Deuteronomy 22:6-7

If a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way, thou shalt not take the dam with the young: but thou shalt in any wise let the dam go, and take the young to thee; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days.

When thou buildest a new house, make a battlement for thy roof

Deuteronomy 22:8

When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence.

Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped

Deuteronomy 23:15-16

Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee: he shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him.

When thou comest into thy neighbour's vineyard, thou mayest eat; thou shalt not put any in thy vessel

Deuteronomy 23:24-25

When thou comest into thy neighbour's vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put any in thy vessel. When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.

A man may not take again the wife he sent away

Deuteronomy 24:1-4

When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, and he write her a bill of divorcement; and if she go and become another man's wife, her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD.

When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war

Deuteronomy 24:5

When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.

No man shall take the nether or the upper millstone to pledge

Deuteronomy 24:6
